USA TODAY Recognizes Deserving Community College Students

In the interest of America’s students, USA TODAY honors not only 4-year university students for their outstanding academic and social achievements, but community college students as well. Each year, the publication recognizes the best-of-the-best students attending 2-year community colleges in America by electing the top 20 to a coveted position on the All-USA Community College Academic Team.

What It Is
Working in collaboration with groups and organizations such as Follett Higher Education Group, The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, The Coca-Cola Foundation, AACC, and Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, USA TODAY offers some of the nations best and brightest community college students a chance to stand out from the crowd through the nomination and then selection process to join the All-USA Community College Teams.

The criteria used to determine placement include grades, academic rigor in their field of study, academic leadership and civic growth, activities, and those who extend themselves beyond the classroom to positively affect the community. Each applicant must submit a 500-word essay detailing how their outstanding intellectual community college endeavor has benefitted the college or community. Schools are responsible for nominating students for consideration, and each school may only make two nominations.

How It Works
To qualify for nomination to the All-USA Community College Team, students must be active, full-time undergraduates of at least junior classification at a 2-year, community college in the U.S. or its territories. The student must be in good academic standing and have U.S. citizenship to qualify. Of those community colleges that participate, many have their own criteria for nominations, so interested students should inquire with their schools about any additional guidelines.

Those fortunate 20 students selected to the All-USA Community College Academic Team each receive a $2,500 cash award, Phi Theta Kappa medallion, and extensive national recognition in USA TODAY and www.usatoday.com. Second and third teams are also named, members of which receive certificates of achievement.
